Japanese brome (Latin Bromus japonicus) is an annual grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Originally native to Eurasia, this grass has established a significant distribution range globally, particularly across North America. Its ability to thrive in diverse environments, from arid steppes to urban roadsides, highlights its evolutionary success as a pioneer species capable of adapting to fluctuating moisture levels and soil conditions.
The botanical structure of the Japanese brome is characterized by slender culms that reach up to 80 cm in height. Farmers usually employ mechanical weeding or strategic grazing before the plant matures and sets its sharp-awned seeds, which can be problematic for livestock.

Typical pests include various cereal aphids and leaf-hoppers, while susceptible crops may suffer from common grass rust and smut infections.
