Brunia stokoei (E. Phillips) is an evergreen ornamental shrub belonging to the family Bruniaceae. Native to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, this species is a characteristic member of the fynbos biome. In agriculture and horticulture, it is primarily cultivated for its unique architectural form and its high value in the international cut-flower trade.
The plant is defined by its erect, branching stems covered in fine, needle-like leaves. Its most distinctive botanical feature is the production of dense, spherical flower heads that offer a silver-grey metallic appearance. This aesthetic quality makes it a highly sought-after filler in modern floral arrangements, providing both structure and texture that is difficult to replicate with other species.
Climatically, Brunia stokoei thrives in regions with Mediterranean-like conditions, characterized by cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. It is intolerant of frost and requires well-drained, acidic, sandy soils to prevent physiological stress. In commercial settings, cultivation is typically restricted to regions where environmental conditions can be strictly managed, often within controlled greenhouse environments or specific temperate zones.
Regarding agronomic management, the key to success is careful irrigation management and substrate selection. Since the species originates from nutrient-poor environments, excessive fertilization—especially with phosphorus—can be detrimental to root health. Propagation is most effective through vegetative cuttings under mist, as germination from seeds is inconsistent and complex due to specific environmental triggers.
The primary economic use is in the production of ornamental cut stems. The crop is prone to several health issues if environmental controls are ignored:
