The plant originates from the tropical island of Borneo (Kalimantan), where it is found adhering to rocks and submerged wood along riverbanks. This native environment dictates its unique biology: it does not require a nutrient-rich soil substrate but rather a stable surface to anchor its rhizomes. Its adaptation to current-heavy environments makes it exceptionally durable when properly established.

Botanically, it features a creeping rhizome and firm, elliptical leaves that can reach significant sizes, distinguishing it from smaller Bucephalandra varieties. The foliage is typically a deep, rich green with a leather-like texture. In optimal lighting conditions, the plant may exhibit subtle metallic shimmers or white spots on the leaves, which are typical characteristics of the species.

Cultivation requires careful attention to water stability and cleanliness. While the species is slow-growing, it benefits from moderate lighting, CO2 injection, and regular liquid fertilization. It is crucial to maintain water temperatures between 22°C and 26°C with good water circulation. Excessive nitrate levels should be avoided to prevent algae growth, which is one of the primary threats to the health of these slow-growing plants.

Maintenance challenges include managing potential «melting» of foliage during initial adaptation to a new environment, as well as protecting the rhizome from bacterial rot.
