Description

European marram grass (Ammophila arenaria (L.) Roth) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. This crop possesses a unique biological ability to thrive in the harsh conditions of shifting sand dunes, playing a critical role in natural and human-aided coastal stabilization and dune management.

The plant is native to the sandy coastlines of Europe and North Africa. Today, its cultivation range covers sandy environments with temperate climates worldwide, where it serves as a primary tool for phytoremediation. The plant is perfectly adapted to high salinity levels in the substrate and the intensive physical pressure of strong coastal winds.

Botanically, European marram grass is a stiff, hardy bunchgrass with a deep-reaching root system consisting of creeping rhizomes. These rhizomes can spread over long distances, forming a dense sod that effectively traps and holds sand, preventing wind erosion. The stems reach heights of 50–120 cm, and its narrow, rolled leaves are an evolutionary adaptation to conserve moisture.

Successful cultivation requires specific environmental conditions: sandy substrates with low organic matter and excellent aeration. The agronomic practice involves planting segments of rhizomes during dormant periods. The plant is highly light-demanding and does not tolerate shade; therefore, establishing new plantations requires open areas free from competition with other plant species.

The agricultural and environmental utility of marram grass is focused on preventing erosion. Major applications include:

  • Stabilization of coastal dunes and man-made sand berms.
  • Protection of transport infrastructure crossing desert or sandy areas.
  • Biological reclamation of disturbed coastal landscapes.

The crop is characterized by high disease resistance; however, under conditions of excessive humidity, it may be susceptible to rust fungi. Pests are relatively rare and usually consist of specific phytophagous insects adapted to coastal dune environments, which generally do not pose a significant threat to the overall health of the plantation.
