Calamintha nepeta

Calamintha nepeta, commonly known as lesser calamint, is a perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its long flowering period, aromatic foliage that smells of peppermint and oregano, and its resilience in various garden environments.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean region and parts of Europe, where it thrives in rocky habitats and open, sunny clearings. Its native environment has shaped its high drought tolerance and ability to withstand relatively poor, lean soils, making it an excellent candidate for sustainable, low-maintenance landscapes.

Botanically, it grows as a subshrub reaching 30 to 60 cm in height. The foliage is small, ovate, and arranged in opposite pairs on branching stems. Calamintha nepeta requires full sun and exceptionally well-draining soil to thrive. It is notoriously intolerant of "wet feet," meaning that soil moisture must be managed carefully, especially in heavy clay conditions. Standard agricultural care involves deadheading to promote secondary flushes of flowers and occasional pruning to maintain a bushy habit.
