This climbing palm is arguably the most economically significant species in the rattan trade, valued for its long, thick, and exceptionally durable stems used globally in high-end furniture production.
The species is native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, specifically found in Malaysia, Sumatra, and parts of Thailand. It thrives in the understory of primary forests, where it utilizes its specialized climbing apparatus—hooked leaves—to ascend towards the forest canopy in search of sunlight.
Botanically, Calamus manan is a solitary, high-climbing palm that can grow up to 100 meters long. The stem is relatively uniform in diameter, typically ranging from 4 to 6 centimeters, covered in a persistent leaf sheath that is often protected by sharp spines. The plant produces large inflorescences followed by round, scaled fruits characteristic of the genus.
Cultivation requires specific environmental parameters, including a humid tropical climate with temperatures between 22°C and 32°C. The soil should be well-drained but rich in organic matter to support the rapid growth of the stems. Successful agrotechnology involves proper forest management where native trees provide the necessary structural support, combined with selective weeding to prevent competition for nutrients.
