Calanthe biloba is a species of perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is a terrestrial orchid known for its sophisticated morphology and its specific flower structure, where the labellum is distinctly bilobed, giving the plant its scientific epithet.
The origin of this orchid lies in the mountainous forest regions of Southeast Asia, including parts of the Himalayas. In these natural habitats, the species thrives in humid, shaded environments where the soil is rich in organic matter and provides excellent drainage, essential for the health of its root system.
Botanically, the plant develops from pseudobulbs, producing broad, plicate leaves that rise in a rosette-like pattern. The inflorescence arises from the base of the plant, typically displaying a series of delicate flowers. The species is highly sensitive to environmental changes and maintains a distinct growth cycle, often followed by a dormant period.
