Botanically, the plant is characterized by a robust rhizome and a basal rosette of large, leathery leaves borne on long petioles. One of its key biological features is the ability of the leaves to change position throughout the day, responding to light intensity and humidity, a process facilitated by a specialized joint at the base of the leaf.
