The native habitat of this species is the humid tropical forests of South America, specifically the Amazon basin. In natural conditions, the plant grows in the lower canopy of the rainforest, where it is accustomed to filtered light and high humidity levels. Commercially, the crop is propagated for sale as a high-quality potted plant, targeted primarily at the indoor plant market.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a robust rhizome and a basal rosette of large, leathery leaves borne on long petioles. One of its key biological features is the ability of the leaves to change position throughout the day, responding to light intensity and humidity, a process facilitated by a specialized joint at the base of the leaf. While the plant produces spike-like inflorescences, their aesthetic value in commercial cultivation is secondary to the foliage.
Successful cultivation of this crop requires strict adherence to agrotechnical protocols. Calathea is highly sensitive to substrate composition, which must be loose, well-aerated, and slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.5).
