Calliandra calothyrsus is a fast-growing, perennial tree species belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). Within the agricultural sector, it is highly regarded for its ability to produce substantial biomass in short rotations, making it a cornerstone of tropical agroforestry systems.
Originally native to the humid tropical regions of Central America and Mexico, this species has been extensively naturalized across Southeast Asia and Africa. Its introduction has transformed rural economies by providing a sustainable source of soil nutrients and reliable livestock feed in degraded landscapes.
Botanically, the plant grows as a shrub or small tree, typically reaching heights of 2 to 6 meters.
