Surinam powderpuff

The Surinam powderpuff (Calliandra surinamensis) is a perennial shrub or small tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is widely recognized for its striking, brush-like flowers, which feature long, silky stamens ranging from white to deep pink, resembling miniature powder puffs. This plant is a favorite in ornamental horticulture due to its long blooming period.

Native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly Suriname, this plant naturally thrives in humid environments. Today, its cultivation range has expanded across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is frequently seen in public parks, botanical gardens, and residential landscapes where the climate remains frost-free throughout the year.

Botanically, it features bipinnate leaves that demonstrate nyctinasty, meaning the leaflets fold together at night or during cloudy weather. The shrub can grow to a height of 3–5 meters but responds very well to regular pruning, which is necessary to maintain a dense, bushy appearance. The plant's rapid growth rate allows it to become a screen or hedge quickly.

Successful cultivation of this species requires full sun exposure and well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. It is relatively adaptable to various soil types, provided they are not waterlogged. In terms of maintenance, regular irrigation is essential during dry spells, although established plants show moderate drought tolerance. Fertilization during the active growing season promotes continuous floral display.
