The species is native to Southwestern Europe, specifically the Iberian Peninsula. Its natural range is concentrated in Portugal and parts of Spain, where it thrives in wetlands and moist environments that experience seasonal inundation, showcasing its resilience to varying water levels.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its heterophylly.
