Naftolsky's water-starwort (lat. Callitriche naftolskyi) is a rare species of aquatic herbaceous plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. Unlike more common species, this representative is a hydrophyte with a narrow range, adapted to the specific conditions of flowing or still water bodies, making it a subject of interest for botanists and environmentalists.
The plant has a characteristic appearance: thin, flexible stems and opposite, often floating leaves that form a rosette on the surface of the water. Depending on the depth of the reservoir, the morphology of the leaves can change from linear to broadly elliptical, which allows the species to successfully adapt to fluctuations in water levels.
The natural range of the species is limited to specific regions with a temperate climate, where the plant prefers clean water bodies with silty or sandy bottoms. It is extremely sensitive to the chemical composition of the water and the level of anthropogenic pollution, which is why it is more often found in low-mineralized, running waters or natural backwaters.
For the successful cultivation of Callitriche naftolskyi, conditions as close as possible to natural ones are required: a stable water temperature, the absence of excessive siltation, and good lighting. The agricultural technology of this species in artificial conditions includes maintaining biological balance and controlling the development of phytoplankton, which can inhibit the growth of the water-starwort.
The economic use of the species is currently limited to ornamental gardening and bioindication of water quality. Due to its ability to actively absorb nutrients from the aquatic environment, the plant can be used in biological purification systems for natural water bodies. Diseases of the crop are mainly associated with fungal infections in stagnant water, while pests are usually insects that damage the vegetative mass.
