Marsh marigold

Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. It is a moisture-loving species naturally found in marshes, wetlands, and along the edges of ponds and streams. In cultivation, it is highly valued for its striking golden-yellow flowers that appear in early spring, often while the plant is still partially submerged.

The native range of this plant extends across the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and North America. Its evolutionary adaptation to waterlogged soils makes it an ideal candidate for gardeners looking to stabilize moist areas of their landscapes or to add vibrant color to pond margins.

Botanically, Caltha palustris is characterized by its succulent, hollow stems and rounded, glossy, heart-shaped leaves. The root system consists of dense, fibrous structures that thrive in heavy, wet soil. The flowers, while lacking true petals, possess bright yellow sepals that provide a brilliant display of color against the dark green foliage during the vernal months.

While they are essentially self-sufficient once established, they benefit from occasional division of mature clumps every few years to maintain vigor and prevent overcrowding.
