Aucher's bellflower

Aucher's bellflower (Campanula aucheri) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Campanulaceae family. This species is highly valued in horticulture for its compact growth habit and vibrant violet-blue flowers, making it an ideal choice for rock gardens and alpine rockeries.

Native to the mountain ranges of the Caucasus and Turkey, this species has evolved in harsh, rocky environments. Its natural habitat dictates its primary physiological need: a perfectly drained environment that mimics the rocky scree of its origins, ensuring the roots remain aerated and never waterlogged.

Botanically, the plant presents as a low-growing rosette of leaves from which short stems emerge, typically reaching heights of 15 to 20 centimeters. The flowers are distinctively bell-shaped and appear in clusters, providing a brilliant display of color that peaks during the mid-summer season.

Successful cultivation requires a gritty, fast-draining, neutral to alkaline soil profile. Growers should avoid rich organic amendments, as these can cause the plant to become leggy and susceptible to disease. Full sun or partial shade is preferred, provided that the soil conditions remain lean and gritty throughout the growing cycle.

The plant is used exclusively for ornamental purposes. Regarding pests and diseases, gardeners must be vigilant against fungal infections such as root rot caused by stagnant water.
