Hybrid Trumpet Vine
Campsis hybrids
Description
Hybrid Trumpet Vine (Campsis × tagliabuana) is a vigorous, deciduous woody vine belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. This hybrid is prized by gardeners for its large, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear in vibrant shades of orange and red during the summer months.
The plant originated from crossing Campsis radicans and C. grandiflora. Its naturalized range includes various temperate regions where it thrives as an ornamental landscape plant. It is highly valued for its ability to quickly cover large surfaces with lush foliage and abundant blossoms.
Botanically, it features pinnately compound leaves and stems equipped with aerial rootlets that act as holdfasts for climbing. It can reach considerable heights, often growing up to 6–10 meters if provided with strong structural support. The plant is noted for its high vigor and rapid growth rate in optimal conditions.
Cultural requirements include full sun exposure to ensure maximum flowering and well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Proper maintenance involves regular pruning, which is essential to manage its size and stimulate new flower-bearing growth each spring. While adaptable to different soil types, water management is key during the establishment phase.
In landscape design, it is primarily used for vertical gardening, covering walls, pergolas, and heavy-duty trellises. It is generally resistant to most pests and diseases, though aphids can occasionally be an issue.
