Often referred to as the "Chinese olive" due to the visual resemblance of its fruits, the tree is a staple in various traditional orchard systems across its native range.
This species is native to the tropical and subtropical zones of Southeast Asia, particularly thriving in southern China, Vietnam, and other humid regions. It is well-adapted to warm, frost-free climates with stable rainfall patterns. Outside of its indigenous habitat, it is cultivated in regions that mirror these environmental conditions to support local agricultural needs and commercial fruit production.
Botanically, the white canary nut features pinnately compound leaves and small, fragrant flowers that cluster into panicles. The fruit is a drupe containing a hard, woody stone (the nut) protected by a fleshy pericarp. The pulp is characterized by a distinctive astringent taste when raw, which significantly mellows and develops complex flavor profiles after processing or curing.
Successful cultivation requires deep, well-draining soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. The tree is intolerant to waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.
