African elemi (Canarium schweinfurthii) is a prominent tropical tree species belonging to the Burseraceae family. Renowned for its versatile economic applications, it is an essential component of agroforestry systems across the tropical belt of Africa. The tree is highly valued by local populations as a source of nutrient-rich fruits, medicinal resins, and durable timber.

The native range of this species extends across tropical Africa, spanning from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, and reaching southwards into Angola. It typically thrives in tropical rainforest environments and transition zones. Within agroforestry, the tree is favored for its rapid growth rate and its positive impact on soil fertility, contributing to the sustainability of mixed-cropping systems.
