Star sedge (Latin: Carex echinata) is a perennial herbaceous plant species belonging to the sedge family, Cyperaceae. Within an agricultural context, it is recognized as a hardy inhabitant of damp meadows, marshes, and bogs, serving as a naturally occurring component of wetland ecosystems and marginal grazing lands.

The species has an extensive distribution across the northern hemisphere, particularly throughout Europe and North America. It is commonly found in acidic, nutrient-poor, and waterlogged soils. In the agricultural landscape, the presence of Star sedge is frequently used by agronomists as a bio-indicator for poorly drained areas or acidic peatlands that require soil improvement.

Botanically, the plant grows in small, dense clumps. It typically reaches a height of 15–40 centimeters, featuring slender, erect, and triangular stems. Its leaves are narrow and often reach up to the length of the stem. The inflorescence is unique, consisting of several loose spikes that appear star-shaped or bristly due to the spreading perigynia when mature.

Regarding its ecological requirements, Star sedge is exceptionally resilient to oligotrophic conditions, meaning it thrives where other species struggle due to nutrient scarcity. It does not require intensive agricultural maintenance, such as fertilization or plowing; however, it is highly sensitive to soil drainage. Improving soil drainage and increasing alkalinity generally leads to the competitive exclusion of this species by more productive meadow grasses.

In terms of agricultural utility, Star sedge is generally classified as poor-quality forage due to its high silica content, which renders it coarse and unpalatable for livestock. Its main value lies in ecological functions, such as soil stabilization along stream banks and its contribution to biodiversity in permanent waterlogged grasslands where cultivation is impractical.
