False fox-sedge (Latin: Carex otrubae) is a robust perennial plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is a highly regarded species in environmental and agricultural projects for its ability to thrive in wet, challenging conditions and its structural role in soil conservation.
The plant originates from Europe, the Caucasus, Western Asia, and North Africa. It typically occupies wetlands, stream banks, and damp meadows. Due to its dense, clump-forming habit, it is frequently used in agricultural settings for stabilizing riverbanks, pond margins, and bioswales designed to manage agricultural runoff.
Botanically, Carex otrubae is characterized by its tufted growth, reaching heights of 30 to 90 cm. Its stems are distinctly triangular in cross-section, while the leaves are coarse, keeled, and deep green. The inflorescences are dense, spike-like clusters that appear from late spring to mid-summer, providing aesthetic value as well as ecological function.
Cultivation requirements favor moist to waterlogged soils, particularly heavy clays or loams. While it prefers full sun, the plant exhibits good tolerance to partial shade. Standard agricultural management involves annual maintenance, such as trimming back the foliage before new growth appears, which keeps the stand vigorous and prevents it from becoming excessively matted.
