Foreign sedge (lat. Carex peregrina) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is recognized in agronomy as a specialized crop capable of occupying ecological niches that are unsuitable for traditional forage or cereal grains. Its robust growth habit makes it an excellent candidate for land reclamation and hydrological stabilization projects.

The origin of this species is traced back to East Asian ecosystems, where it naturally thrives in marshy lands and along water edges. Today, its cultivation range has expanded across temperate regions globally, where it is valued for its hardiness and ability to thrive in challenging soil conditions that would be considered waterlogged for conventional agricultural practices.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a dense, tufted growth form with rigid, linear leaves. Its root system is exceptionally dense and fibrous, providing strong anchorage in soft, saturated substrates. The reproductive structures consist of characteristic sedge spikes that develop during the mid-to-late summer months, ensuring consistent seed production under optimal moisture conditions.

Climate and soil requirements are strictly dictated by the species' preference for high-moisture environments. It performs best in soils with high organic matter content and constant water tables. While it is highly adaptable, the success of the crop relies on proper site selection and initial protection from competing vegetation during the establishment phase, ensuring the plant forms a stable sod cover.

Regarding pest and disease management, the primary challenges include leaf rusts and fungal pathogens that appear in environments with poor air circulation. Effective agronomic control involves implementing thinning practices and managing water levels to prevent excessive stagnation. Despite these challenges, its low maintenance requirements make it a highly sustainable option for specialized agricultural and environmental use.
