Rooted sedge (lat. Carex rhizina) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. In an agricultural and land management context, it is recognized for its ability to form dense sod and provide long-term soil cover in diverse environmental conditions.

The native range of this species extends across the forest and forest-steppe regions of East Asia. The plant is well-adapted to temperate climates, demonstrating high resilience to varying seasonal temperatures and moisture levels. It naturally inhabits meadows, forest edges, and floodplains, where it thrives in semi-shaded to open locations.

Botanically, Carex rhizina is distinguished by its creeping rhizomes which facilitate rapid spread and soil binding. The foliage consists of narrow, stiff, deep green leaves forming basal rosettes. Its reproductive structures are typical of the Carex genus, consisting of inflorescences that produce small, dry nutlets, aiding in both seed-based propagation and vegetative expansion.

Cultivation requirements for this species are relatively modest, as it is naturally suited to varying soil types, particularly loams and sandy soils with good drainage. While it is quite hardy, agricultural success is optimized when the soil is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged, as stagnant water can lead to root degradation in younger plantings.
