Carpobrotus aequilaterus, commonly known as the coastal ice plant, is a perennial succulent belonging to the Aizoaceae family. This species is widely recognized for its robust, creeping growth habit and its ability to thrive in harsh, saline-rich coastal environments where other vegetation often fails to establish.

Native to South Africa, the plant has successfully naturalized in various regions globally, particularly along the Pacific and Mediterranean coasts. Its cultivation range is strictly confined to mild climates that do not experience prolonged sub-zero temperatures, as the plant's succulent tissues are susceptible to severe frost damage.

The botanical characteristics of this crop include thick, triangular, fleshy leaves arranged along trailing stems that root at the nodes. This morphological adaptation allows for extensive ground coverage. During the flowering season, the plant produces large, vibrant, daisy-like flowers, followed by fleshy, succulent fruits that are often referred to as sour figs due to their taste profile.

Regarding cultivation, Carpobrotus aequilaterus is highly drought-tolerant and requires full sun exposure to flourish. It prefers sandy, well-drained soils and is exceptionally well-suited for sites with poor nutritional quality.
