Shiny safflower (Carthamus nitidus) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. While less widespread than its commercial relative, Carthamus tinctorius, the species C. nitidus is recognized for its robust nature and adaptation to challenging environmental conditions, making it a subject of agricultural research.
The plant originates from the arid regions of the Mediterranean and Western Asia. Throughout its evolution, it has developed significant drought tolerance, allowing it to thrive in environments where other traditional crops would struggle due to water scarcity or high salinity in the soil profile.
