The plant originates from the arid regions of the Mediterranean basin, North Africa, and the Near East. It is natively adapted to harsh, semi-desert conditions, including high salinity and nutrient-poor soils. This evolutionary background makes it a target for breeding programs aiming to develop crops capable of surviving in changing climatic conditions with reduced inputs.

Botanically, Carthamus tenuis is characterized by a slender, branched stem reaching heights of approximately 30–60 cm. Its leaves are usually narrow, lanceolate, and adorned with sharp spines along the margins. The flowers, gathered in distinctive thistle-like heads, exhibit vibrant yellow to orange hues. Agronomic management focuses on weed control in the early growth stages, as the plant grows slowly until it establishes its root system. Minimal fertilization is generally required due to its ability to extract minerals from poor soils, but proper spacing is essential to ensure adequate air circulation and reduce disease pressure.

The primary agricultural interest in this species lies in its potential as an oilseed source and a natural dye component. While commercially less established than its domesticated relative, it contains fatty acid profiles that are beneficial for industrial and potential culinary applications. The most common phytosanitary challenges for this plant include various forms of rust, powdery mildew, and insect pests such as aphids or soil-dwelling coleoptera larvae that target the taproot.
