Silver cassia

Silver cassia (Cassia artemisioides), taxonomically reclassified as Senna artemisioides, is a perennial evergreen shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. Renowned for its feathery, silvery foliage and bright yellow flowers, it is an essential plant for landscapes in arid and semi-arid climates where water conservation is a priority.

Native to the arid regions of Australia, this species is exceptionally well-adapted to harsh environmental conditions. Its natural habitat includes sandy and rocky soils with limited water availability. In agricultural and horticultural practices, it is favored for its ability to thrive in challenging environments where typical ornamental species would fail to survive.

From a botanical standpoint, the shrub is characterized by its distinct gray-green foliage, which is divided into fine, needle-like leaflets. The entire plant is covered in fine hairs that provide a silvery appearance and help reduce moisture loss through transpiration. The bright yellow, pea-like flowers appear in clusters, creating a striking visual contrast against the muted tones of the foliage.

Optimal growth requires full sun exposure and extremely well-draining soil. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which frequently lead to root rot. While the species is drought-tolerant once established, young plants require periodic irrigation until the root system is deep and stable. The plant performs best in sandy or gravelly soil profiles with low organic matter content.
