Steller's cassiope

Steller's cassiope (Cassiope stelleriana) is a perennial, low-growing evergreen subshrub belonging to the heath family, Ericaceae. Often known for its resilience, this plant is a staple of arctic and alpine landscapes, valued for its dense, moss-like foliage and delicate floral display.

The native habitat of this species includes arctic and subarctic regions of North America and Eastern Asia. It typically thrives in rocky meadows, alpine tundras, and heathlands, where it is often associated with other cold-tolerant vegetation that benefits from winter snow protection.

Botanically, it features scale-like leaves that are tightly appressed to the stems, providing a unique texture. During the flowering season, it produces solitary, bell-shaped, white to pale pink flowers that hang gracefully from the tips of the shoots, offering a high aesthetic value in specialized gardens.

Successful cultivation requires mimicking its natural environment: cool temperatures, high air humidity, and acidic, well-draining soil. It is highly intolerant of drought and intense direct summer heat, necessitating placement in partially shaded areas. Careful attention must be paid to drainage to prevent root rot.

In landscaping, it is primarily used in rock gardens and cold-climate displays. While generally hardy, it can be susceptible to fungal pathogens if air circulation is poor or if the substrate remains waterlogged. Regular monitoring for pests like mites is recommended to maintain optimal plant health.
