Description

Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) is an evergreen coniferous species belonging to the Pinaceae family. It is a majestic tree highly valued in forestry and arboriculture for its durable timber, ornamental value, and resilience. In its natural habitat, the tree can reach heights of up to 40 meters, featuring a wide-spreading crown and a sturdy, robust trunk.

The species originates from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and Algeria, where it grows at high elevations. It is well-adapted to Mediterranean-type climates characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Today, it is widely planted in temperate regions as a park tree and in silviculture due to its ability to thrive in diverse environmental conditions compared to other cedar species.

Botanically, the Atlas cedar is characterized by short, stiff, needle-like leaves arranged in dense clusters. The cones are barrel-shaped and stand upright on the branches, taking multiple years to mature. The root system is deep and extensive, which contributes to the tree's excellent wind stability and survival rate in steep or rocky terrain.

Successful cultivation requires selecting a site with full sunlight exposure and deep, well-draining soil. It is particularly sensitive to waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root damage. Young plants require consistent watering during the establishment phase, but once mature, the Atlas cedar is remarkably drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes.
