Ceiba chodatii

Ceiba chodatii, commonly referred to as the bottle tree, is a distinctive deciduous species belonging to the Malvaceae family. It is widely recognized for its swollen, succulent trunk which stores water, an essential evolutionary adaptation that allows the tree to thrive in regions characterized by severe seasonal water scarcity.

Native to South America, specifically the dry forests of Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia, this species is well-adapted to subtropical environments. Its natural habitat is defined by alternating wet and dry seasons, a cycle which the tree requires to maintain its structural integrity and health during various developmental stages.

The tree exhibits several unique botanical features, including a bark surface that is often covered with woody spines, particularly in younger specimens. The leaves are palmately compound, and the inflorescences consist of large, showy flowers that range from white to pale yellow. The fruit is a dehiscent capsule containing seeds embedded in a soft, floss-like fiber.

Cultivation of Ceiba chodatii requires strict adherence to light and drainage requirements. It demands full sun exposure to maintain its characteristic growth habit. Soils must be extremely well-drained; heavy, moisture-retentive soils are detrimental and frequently lead to root rot. During the dormant winter season, irrigation should be strictly limited to prevent waterlogging.
