Desert hackberry (Celtis pallida) is a resilient perennial shrub belonging to the Cannabaceae family. Unlike other species in the genus which are typically trees, this plant thrives as a dense, spiny shrub that is perfectly adapted to harsh arid environments.
The native range of this species spans across the southwestern United States and throughout Mexico. It typically occupies scrublands and rocky slopes, where its ability to withstand extreme temperatures and long periods of drought makes it a dominant feature of the local vegetation.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its small, leathery, evergreen leaves and zig-zagged, thorny branches. The fruit produced is a small, edible orange or yellow drupe that is a vital food source for various bird species and desert wildlife, playing a significant role in local ecosystem biodiversity.
