Centaurea granatensis

Centaurea granatensis is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species is recognized as a rare endemic plant, primarily focused within the scientific community due to its limited distribution and distinct evolutionary adaptations to specific Mediterranean ecosystems.

The plant originates from the southern regions of Spain, particularly the mountainous landscapes of the Granada province. Its natural range is restricted to specific calcareous soils found in high-altitude environments, where it has evolved to thrive under harsh climatic conditions characterized by long dry summers and cool winters.

Botanical features include a sturdy, often pubescent stem and specialized leaf structures designed to minimize evapotranspiration. The inflorescences consist of typical thistle-like flower heads with a unique arrangement of phyllaries, distinguishing it from other members of the genus Centaurea.

Regarding cultivation and agronomy, this species requires excellent soil drainage and high solar radiation levels. It is not suitable for typical agricultural fields due to its high sensitivity to excessive soil moisture and root zone compaction. Successful propagation depends on mimicking its native limestone-rich, porous soil environment.

The primary use of the species remains within botanical research and specialized alpine horticulture. Typical pests and diseases include common aphid species and localized fungal infections such as powdery mildew, which are predominantly triggered by improper ventilation or excessive moisture levels in the growing environment.
