Centaurea idaea is a distinct herbaceous perennial belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species is highly specialized, having evolved to thrive in the harsh, high-altitude environments of the Mediterranean, specifically within the mountain ranges of Crete, Greece.
Geographically, this plant is a rare endemic, restricted to the rocky slopes and subalpine zones of Mount Ida. Its natural habitat is defined by extreme seasonal temperature fluctuations, intense UV radiation, and thin, nutrient-poor rocky soils, which have shaped its unique morphological characteristics.
The botanical structure of the plant features specialized foliage, often covered with fine hairs that help reflect excess sunlight and minimize water loss through transpiration. The root system is robust and adapted for anchorage in limestone crevices, allowing the plant to secure nutrients and stability on steep, shifting scree slopes.
Cultivation requirements for this species are exceptionally stringent, making it unsuitable for standard agricultural practices. It requires perfect drainage, full sun exposure, and a substrate that closely mimics its native rocky environment.
