Unlike most algae that reside in aquatic environments, this species has adapted to a terrestrial parasitic lifestyle, specifically colonizing the leaves and stems of host plants. It is primarily recognized as a pathogen of the Aucuba genus, leading to physiological disturbances in the host.

The morphology of this alga involves the formation of disc-shaped or irregular thalli on the plant surface. These colonies penetrate the cuticle and epidermis of the leaf, causing necrotic spots and significantly impairing the plant's photosynthetic capacity. As the infection progresses, the leaves may show yellowing or browning, followed by premature leaf drop, which diminishes the ornamental value of the plant.

Geographically, this pathogen is most prevalent in humid, warm climates that favor the motility of its zoospores. In cultivation settings, however, it can be found worldwide wherever host plants are grown in greenhouses or protected structures. High humidity and poor air circulation act as the primary drivers for the rapid spread of the alga within a nursery environment.

Maintaining proper spacing between plants is essential to ensure adequate airflow, which prevents the leaf surface from staying wet for extended periods. Since the alga requires water for spore dispersal, modifying irrigation practices to target the soil rather than the foliage is a key preventive measure.

In commercial plant production, Cephaleuros aucubae represents a significant management challenge due to the difficulty of complete eradication. Control strategies focus on integrated pest management:
