Old Man Cactus

Cephalocereus senilis, commonly known as the Old Man Cactus, is a distinctive member of the Cactaceae family. This species is famous for its dense, shaggy white hair that covers its entire column-shaped stem. This unique morphological feature provides effective protection against intense solar radiation and assists in moisture retention in its arid native environment.

The plant originates from the arid mountain regions of Central Mexico, specifically within Hidalgo and Guanajuato. Its natural habitat consists of limestone slopes with extremely well-draining, stony soils. Given its native environment, the species has adapted to survive high daytime heat and significantly cooler night-time temperatures throughout the year.

Botanically, the Old Man Cactus is characterized by its slow growth rate and inability to produce hair in low-light environments. The hair itself is actually modified spines that remain soft and long. As the plant matures, it may develop a cephalium, a specialized structure where the flowers emerge, usually appearing after many years of healthy development.

Successful cultivation requires a highly porous, mineral-based substrate that mimics its natural rocky habitat. It is essential to provide full sunlight to maintain the integrity of its woolly appearance. Watering should be infrequent, following a 'soak and dry' method, and must be strictly reduced during the winter dormant season to prevent root rot.
