The native range of this plant covers most of the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It has successfully naturalized across diverse environments, including grasslands, pasturelands, and arable fields. Its distribution is closely linked to its ability to thrive in moist, nutrient-rich soils, making it a common sight in fields managed under high-input fertilization regimes.

Botanically, it is characterized by creeping, branched stems that form dense mats. The leaves are opposite and pubescent, which helps in moisture retention. One of the most important biological features is its capacity for both sexual reproduction via seeds and vegetative regeneration from stem nodes, which complicates eradication efforts significantly.
