Southern hornwort

Southern hornwort (Ceratophyllum australe) is an aquatic perennial plant belonging to the Ceratophyllaceae family. Distinguished by its lack of true roots, the plant remains free-floating, absorbing essential minerals and nutrients directly from the water column, which makes it an efficient biological agent in aquatic ecosystems.

Native to tropical and subtropical climates, particularly in Australia and Southeast Asia, this plant has gained attention in agricultural settings for its role in water purification. It is widely utilized in managed fisheries and artificial basins to improve water quality by sequestering dissolved nutrients and reducing organic pollution.

Botanically, the plant features whorls of stiff, dichotomously branched leaves that provide a dense structure. The stems are fragile yet fast-growing, capable of adapting to varying depths. Its photosynthetic rate is high, and it functions effectively under diverse light conditions, often serving as a pioneer species in colonizing new water bodies.

Agronomic requirements involve maintaining stable water parameters, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C being optimal for rapid development. Maintenance practices primarily focus on population management; due to its aggressive growth rate, periodic harvesting is required to prevent excessive coverage, which could otherwise impede water circulation or oxygen exchange in localized areas.
