Hornwort

Ceratophyllum demersum L.

Description

Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum L.) is a rootless, submerged aquatic plant belonging to the Ceratophyllaceae family. It is a cosmopolitan species, widespread in freshwater habitats across the globe. Due to the lack of true roots, the plant relies on modified leaves to anchor itself to the substrate or remains free-floating, drawing nutrients directly from the water column.

The plant features long, branching stems with whorls of rigid, dark green leaves that are finely divided and serrated. Its high growth rate allows it to form dense underwater canopies, providing vital structural complexity to aquatic ecosystems. It is a perennial plant that can survive in various water conditions, ranging from stagnant ponds to slow-moving rivers.

In terms of cultivation, hornwort is highly undemanding. It thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 28°C and can adapt to a wide variety of lighting conditions, from low light to bright sunlight. It does not require special fertilizers, as it efficiently absorbs dissolved nitrates and phosphates directly from the surrounding water, making it a robust choice for various water management projects.

The agricultural and environmental utility of hornwort is significant. It is widely used in aquaculture for phytoremediation, as it effectively cleans water by reducing nutrient concentrations and preventing harmful algal blooms. Moreover, its dense foliage acts as an essential nursery for fish fry and a protected site for spawning, contributing to higher survival rates in artificial rearing ponds.

While generally hardy, hornwort can be susceptible to colonization by algae when nutrient levels are too high or when there is insufficient water movement. Excessive growth may also necessitate regular pruning to ensure oxygen levels remain stable during the night. Management strategies typically involve physical harvesting of excess biomass to maintain the balance of the aquatic system.
