Ceratophyllum platyacanthum, commonly known as a type of hornwort, is a perennial submerged aquatic plant belonging to the Ceratophyllaceae family. It is a highly specialized hydrophyte that lacks true roots, relying instead on modified shoots called rhizoids to anchor itself into the substrate or drift freely within the water column.
The native range of this species extends across the temperate and subtropical zones of Eurasia. It is primarily found in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater bodies, including ponds, shallow lakes, and irrigation ditches. These environments provide the stable conditions necessary for the plant to form dense underwater beds that are crucial for local aquatic ecosystems.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by rigid, brittle stems and whorled leaves that are divided into linear segments. Its specific epithet, platyacanthum, refers to the distinctive flattened spines found on its fruit (achenes), which assist in anchoring the plant to the lake or pond floor, ensuring successful propagation within the habitat.
Successful cultivation requires nutrient-rich water and adequate exposure to sunlight to support photosynthesis. While it is tolerant of various water parameters, optimal growth occurs in stagnant water with a temperature range of 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. The plant is essentially self-sufficient, requiring minimal intervention beyond maintaining water quality and preventing excessive competition from invasive algae.
