Bacopa

Chaenostoma cordatum, commonly referred to in the horticultural trade as Bacopa, is a member of the Scrophulariaceae family. This trailing, herbaceous perennial is widely grown as an annual ornamental plant in many regions, favored for its dense carpet of small, delicate flowers and its vigorous, spreading growth habit.

The plant is native to Southern Africa, where it thrives in moist, temperate habitats. Its natural distribution and adaptability have made it a staple in global gardening, particularly for use in hanging baskets and containers. The plant does not tolerate frost, which is why it is managed as an annual in cooler climates while often acting as a short-lived perennial in warmer regions.

Botanically, it is characterized by heart-shaped, serrated leaves and flowers with five petals, appearing in shades of white, pink, or blue. The plant exhibits a prostrate or semi-pendulous habit, making it an excellent candidate for covering hanging planters. It is noted for its exceptional "self-cleaning" ability, meaning old flowers drop off naturally, maintaining a tidy appearance.

Successful cultivation requires consistent moisture; the root zone must never fully dry out, as the plant will quickly wilt and suffer damage.
