Tagasaste (Chamaecytisus proliferus), often referred to as the tree lucerne, is a perennial evergreen shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is widely recognized in agricultural circles for its exceptional ability to produce high-quality protein-rich fodder in environments where traditional pasture crops struggle to survive due to water scarcity.
The plant originates from the Canary Islands and has been successfully introduced to various mediterranean and temperate climates worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Its natural resilience has allowed it to become a staple forage source in pastoral farming systems located on poor or marginal soils.
Botanically, tagasaste is characterized by its fast-growing habit, typically reaching heights of up to 4 meters if left unpruned. It features simple, lanceolate leaves and white pea-like flowers. Its deep taproot system is its most defining trait, allowing the plant to reach deep-seated soil moisture during extreme summer droughts.
For successful cultivation, tagasaste requires well-drained, porous soils with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rapid root decay. Standard agronomic practices involve strategic planting, initial protection from grazing animals, and regular pruning to encourage dense foliage growth.
Economically, the crop serves multiple purposes including animal fodder, windbreaks, and soil remediation. Because of its leguminous nature, it effectively enriches soil nitrogen content, making it an excellent candidate for agroforestry projects and ecological land restoration programs that aim to improve overall soil health.
