This species is native to the humid tropical forests of Central America, primarily within Costa Rica and Panama. It thrives in the understory of dense rainforests, where it benefits from protection against direct sunlight. Its natural habitat is characterized by consistently high moisture levels and filtered light, which dictates its primary cultivation requirements.
Botanically, this palm is notable for its vigorous clumping habit. The stems are slender and cane-like, typically reaching heights of 3-4 meters in optimal conditions.
