Chara contraria is a species of multicellular green algae belonging to the family Characeae. Despite its morphological resemblance to higher plants, it is a macroscopic alga that functions as a crucial primary producer within various freshwater and brackish water ecosystems.
The global distribution of this species spans multiple continents, including Eurasia and North America. It thrives in stagnant or slow-moving water bodies with high calcium content. In agricultural settings and aquaculture, it is valued for its ability to filter water and maintain ecological balance by stabilizing the sediment and reducing turbidity.
Botanically, Chara contraria features a complex thallus structure consisting of a main axis and whorls of branchlets, often encrusted with calcium carbonate. This calcification makes the plant notably rigid and brittle to the touch. The life cycle involves both sexual and vegetative reproduction, with specialized organs known as oogonia and antheridia.
Regarding cultivation and environmental requirements, the species is highly sensitive to water quality. It requires clear, well-lit water with an alkaline pH (typically 7.0–9.0). Due to its low tolerance for nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, it serves as an excellent bioindicator for assessing the trophic status and health of ponds and wetlands.
In terms of economic usage, it is utilized in pond management to control algal blooms, as it competes with planktonic algae for nutrients. Additionally, it serves as a habitat and forage resource for aquatic invertebrates and fish. Key management practices include:
