Strict goosefoot (Latin: Chenopodium strictum) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. In agronomy, it is classified as a significant weed species that often colonizes arable lands, causing yield reductions in a variety of row crops, including corn, sugar beets, and various vegetable species.
The plant originates from the Eurasian continent but has expanded its range globally due to human-mediated seed dispersal and its ability to thrive in disturbed environments. It is frequently found along field borders, waste areas, and within intensive agricultural systems where nitrogen levels are elevated, allowing the plant to reach its full vegetative potential.
Botanically, it is identified by its erect stem and characteristic foliage, which often features a mealy, grayish appearance due to glandular hairs. This adaptation helps the plant survive periods of drought and high solar radiation. The plant produces a high volume of small, long-lived seeds, which can remain dormant in the soil seed bank for extended periods, posing a challenge for multi-year management.

Cultural practices such as crop rotation, maintaining high crop density to shade out seedlings, and timely mechanical cultivation of inter-rows are essential. Chemical control is also widely utilized, although the species can develop resistance if active ingredients are not rotated correctly.
The species is susceptible to various pests, including leaf miners and certain species of flea beetles, which can cause significant damage to the leaves. Diseases like downy mildew are also prevalent in dense populations. Despite its status as a weed, its impact on the nitrogen cycle in the field suggests it could be an indicator of high fertility in soil, which is a valuable insight for precision farming management.
