Fleeceflower (Reynoutria multiflora, commonly known as Chinese knotweed or Fo-ti) is a perennial vine belonging to the Polygonaceae family. It is globally recognized as a high-value medicinal crop, particularly valued for its large, tuberous roots which are extensively utilized in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.
Native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and Vietnam, the plant thrives in hilly terrains and forested areas. In agricultural settings, it is cultivated in regions that provide a temperate climate, significant annual rainfall, and well-draining soil, which are essential for the development of high-quality, dense root systems.
The plant features woody stems that act as climbers, cordate-shaped leaves, and panicles of white to greenish-white flowers. From an agronomical perspective, the roots are the primary yield component. These roots require several years of undisturbed growth to accumulate the desired concentrations of stilbenes, flavonoids, and quinones.
Cultivation requires fertile, loamy soil with excellent drainage to prevent root rot. As a climbing plant, it necessitates strong support systems like trellises or mesh.
