Mackenzie water hemlock (Cicuta mackenziana) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is strictly a wild species and not a cultivated agricultural crop. Due to its extreme toxicity, it is primarily studied in botanical research and ecological field surveys rather than agricultural production.
The species is native to North America, specifically distributed throughout northern Canada and Alaska. It is a moisture-loving plant typically found in wetlands, fens, riverbanks, and marshy areas. It has evolved to thrive in cold, harsh climates, showing remarkable resilience to the fluctuating hydrological conditions of northern ecosystems.
Botanically, it is defined by its chambered rhizome, which is the most toxic part of the plant. The stems are smooth and hollow, often displaying a glaucous or waxy appearance. The foliage is compound and finely divided, and the plant produces white flowers arranged in characteristic compound umbels that emerge during the short northern summer season.
There is no defined agronomy for this species, as it is considered a dangerous weed or toxic plant in range management. It does not require fertilizers or cultivation practices; in fact, its presence on agricultural land is considered an ecological liability. If found, vegetation management usually involves mechanical removal with extreme caution to prevent contact with skin or accidental ingestion.
The plant has no commercial or agricultural use. Its impact on farming is limited to the risk it poses to livestock. Grazing animals that ingest the plant, especially in the spring when young shoots emerge, are at high risk of rapid intoxication due to the concentration of cicutoxin, which causes severe neurological symptoms and often death in cattle and sheep.
