Indonesian cinnamon

Cinnamomum burmannii

Description

Indonesian cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) is a perennial evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family. It is widely recognized in global agriculture as a primary source of cassia cinnamon, which is distinct from the sweeter Cinnamomum verum due to its robust flavor profile and higher oil content.

The species is native to Southeast Asia, specifically the Indonesian archipelago. Commercial cultivation is primarily concentrated in the tropical regions of Indonesia, where the specific climatic conditions allow for the development of high-quality bark, which is the economically valuable part of the plant.

Botanically, it is a medium-sized tree that can reach heights of up to 15 meters. The leaves are glossy, ovate-oblong, and display a characteristic three-nerved venation pattern. The tree produces small, dark-colored drupes that contain a single seed, which is the standard method of propagation in agricultural plantations.

The species requires a tropical climate with high temperatures and significant annual rainfall. It thrives in deep, fertile, and well-drained soils, typically loamy or volcanic in origin. Farmers often plant it at varying elevations to ensure optimal development, as the tree is sensitive to waterlogging, which often leads to root damage.

Agricultural management practices involve several key stages:

  • Seedling preparation in nurseries with controlled light conditions;
  • Regular pruning to promote the growth of lateral branches;
  • Controlled harvesting of the bark after trees reach maturity;
  • Periodic monitoring for fungal pathogens and insect infestations.

Economically, Cinnamomum burmannii is used extensively in the food industry for flavoring, as well as in the production of essential oils for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Despite its hardiness, it remains susceptible to pests such as borers and leaf-miners, requiring integrated pest management strategies to maintain plantation health and yield quality.
