Wild cinnamon (Cinnamomum iners) is an evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family. In its natural habitat, it can reach heights of 15 to 20 meters. The plant is highly valued for the aromatic compounds found in its leaves and bark, which are utilized in both the pharmaceutical and food production sectors.

The plant originates from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, specifically regions within Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. In commercial agriculture, it is cultivated primarily in areas with hot, humid climates characterized by consistent rainfall and the absence of extreme temperature fluctuations throughout the growing season.

Botanically, the plant features dense, leathery lanceolate leaves with distinct longitudinal veins. It produces small, yellowish-white flowers arranged in inflorescences. The fruit consists of small, single-seeded drupes that ripen post-flowering. Although its bark possesses a characteristic scent, it is generally less pungent compared to the related species, Cinnamomum verum.

Cultivation requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soils with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. The tree thrives in full sun but requires partial shade during its juvenile stages. Ideal temperatures for growth range between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Key management practices include consistent irrigation and strict avoidance of waterlogging, which can cause severe root damage.
