Cinnamomum osmophloeum, commonly known as Taiwanese cinnamon, is an evergreen tree species belonging to the Lauraceae family. It is endemic to the mountainous regions of Taiwan and has gained significant interest in agricultural research due to its high content of cinnamaldehyde, which makes it a valuable alternative to traditional Cinnamomum cassia.

The tree exhibits typical botanical characteristics for the genus, including leathery, lanceolate leaves and an aromatic bark that releases a sweet, spicy fragrance. Under natural conditions, it can grow to a considerable height, but managed plantations keep the trees pruned to facilitate systematic harvesting of leaves and twigs, which are the primary sources of its medicinal and aromatic extracts.

The climate requirements for this culture are strictly subtropical. It thrives in humid environments with annual temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Soil preference is for well-drained, acidic to neutral loamy soils. Water management is crucial; although it requires high humidity, the plant is susceptible to root rot if the soil becomes waterlogged, necessitating careful site selection on well-draining slopes.

In commercial agriculture, the tree is primarily grown for its essential oil production. The leaves are harvested for their high concentration of trans-cinnamaldehyde, used extensively in the food flavoring industry, as well as in natural pesticides and pharmaceutical formulations. The bark also serves as a high-quality spice, prized for its unique chemical profile and antioxidant properties.

Cultivation practices involve regular pruning to encourage vegetative growth and maintain a height suitable for mechanical or manual harvesting. Key pests include various leaf-eating insects, and the crop can be prone to fungal infections if aeration is poor.
