Veldt grape (Cissus quadrangularis) is a perennial succulent plant belonging to the Vitaceae family. It is distinct for its quadrangular, fleshy, jointed stems that give it a unique appearance compared to other vine species. As a fast-growing climber, it utilizes tendrils to scale supports, making it a highly productive species in its native tropical environment.
The plant originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Arabia, and parts of Southeast Asia. It is remarkably adapted to arid conditions, thriving in regions with long dry spells. Due to its endurance and medicinal value, it is now cultivated in various tropical countries as a high-value agricultural crop, specifically for the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries.
Botanically, Cissus quadrangularis acts as a water-storage specialist. Its stem anatomy allows it to maintain physiological activity when water is scarce. The leaves are small and often drop during drought periods to minimize transpiration. The plant produces small, white-to-green flowers, followed by globose, inedible berries that contain seeds for reproduction, though propagation is primarily done via stem cuttings.
Regarding agrotechnology, the crop requires well-draining, sandy or loamy soils to prevent waterlogging. It is highly intolerant of "wet feet," which can cause root and stem rot. Growth is most vigorous at temperatures between 25°C and 35°C, with full sun exposure being ideal. In field conditions, trellising is recommended to ensure proper air circulation and to facilitate easier harvesting of the biomass.
