Cistus revolii

Cistus revolii is an evergreen, aromatic shrub belonging to the Cistaceae family. Known commonly as a type of rockrose, this plant is highly regarded for its resilience in arid conditions and its ability to thrive in poor, rocky substrates typical of Mediterranean climates.

The origin of this species is linked to the rocky slopes of the Mediterranean basin. Its natural distribution is largely concentrated in regions with hot, dry summers and mild winters, where the plant has evolved to survive with minimal rainfall and high solar radiation, making it an excellent candidate for xeriscaping.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its woody base, densely arranged leaves with revolute (curved) margins, and papery, delicate flowers. These flowers often appear in shades of white or light pink. The plant is rich in resins, specifically labdanum, which provides its distinctive fragrance and plays a key role in its survival strategy against dehydration.

Agronomic requirements are focused on mimicking its natural habitat. It requires full sunlight to bloom successfully and a substrate with excellent drainage. Heavy soils should be avoided or amended with gravel to prevent root rot. Once established, the plant is extremely drought-tolerant and requires almost no supplemental fertilization, as it is adapted to nutrient-poor soils.
