Limequat (Citrofortunella floridana) is an intergeneric hybrid resulting from a cross between a lime (Citrus aurantiifolia) and a kumquat (Fortunella margarita). As a member of the Rutaceae family, this evergreen shrub is highly valued for its compact size, cold tolerance, and the ability to produce edible-skinned fruits that combine the intense acidity of a lime with the sweet undertones of a kumquat.

The origin of this culture traces back to the early 20th century when botanist Walter Tennyson Swingle developed the hybrid in Florida. The primary goal was to create a citrus plant that could thrive in cooler climates compared to standard limes. Today, it is grown in various subtropical regions and has become a popular choice for indoor or greenhouse cultivation in temperate zones.

Botanically, the limequat is a small, bushy tree characterized by glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant, white flowers that bloom periodically throughout the year. The fruit is typically small and oval-shaped. Unlike common limes, the rind of the limequat is thin, sweet, and devoid of bitterness, allowing the consumer to eat the entire fruit raw without peeling.

Agronomic requirements are centered on providing high levels of indirect light and well-draining soil. The plant thrives in an environment with high humidity and consistent moisture, though it is highly sensitive to waterlogged roots.
